Forest School: 6R Combines Nature with Mathematics

Bringing Geometry to Life

The great outdoors became a living classroom this week as Class 6R headed into the forest for a day of exploration, teamwork, and practical learning. While Forest School is a firm favorite for its physical and environmental activities, this latest session saw our Year 6 pupils applying their classroom knowledge to the natural world.

In a brilliant display of cross-curricular learning, the students took their maths curriculum outside. Armed with measuring tools, 6R worked in groups to calculate the perimeter of various designated areas within the woods.

By moving away from paper and rulers and utilising the uneven terrain of the forest floor, the children gained a deeper, more tactile understanding of spatial measurements. Whether it was measuring the boundary of a clearing or the perimeter of a forest floor habitat, the "awesome" experience proved that maths is everywhere around us.

More Than Just Measurements

Of course, it wasn't all about the numbers! Alongside their geometric challenges, the children took part in their "usual" Forest School activities, which focus on:

  • Building Resilience: Navigating the outdoor environment in various weather conditions.

  • Teamwork: Collaborating on construction and problem-solving tasks.

  • Environmental Awareness: Respecting local wildlife and understanding the forest ecosystem.

The day was a resounding success, proving once again that some of the best learning happens when we step outside the traditional classroom walls.
