Advice for Parents
What to do if you think your child has SEND
If you have concerns about your child’s progress, development, or wellbeing, we follow a clear pathway to ensure support is put in place as early as possible.
1. Talk to us first
The first step is always to speak with your child’s Class Teacher or our school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo- Miss Parry).
We will meet with you to discuss your concerns, look at your child’s work, and review any assessments we have conducted.
2. The Graduated Approach: "Assess, Plan, Do, Review"
Wirral schools use a cycle called the Graduated Approach to provide support. This ensures that help is tailored to your child’s specific needs:
-
Assess: We gather information from you, the teacher, and the child.
-
Plan: We agree on the support needed and what the expected outcomes are.
-
Do: The planned support (such as small group interventions or specific resources) is put into place.
-
Review: We meet to see if the support is working or if we need to try a different approach.
3. Accessing Specialist Advice
If your child needs support beyond what the school can typically provide, we may seek advice from Wirral’s specialist services, such as:
-
Inclusion Schools Support Team (ISST)
-
Educational Psychology Service
-
Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)
-
CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services)
4. Exploring SENDLO
While we work together at school, we encourage you to visit SENDLO (Wirral’s Local Offer). It features a dedicated "Getting Started" section for parents who are new to the SEND world, including jargon-busters and guides on parental rights. Visit our separate tab all about Wirral's local SENDLO offer.

We believe in "Early Identification." The sooner we identify a barrier to learning, the sooner we can help your child overcome it. You do not need a formal medical diagnosis for your child to receive support at Townfield.
