PSHCE

PSHCE Curriculum

At our school, we follow the trust's comprehensive plans for Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic (PSHCE) education, which is central to our pupils' personal development. We take a proactive, preventative approach to education, aiming to combat negative issues before they arise by equipping children with the knowledge they need to make safe choices and informed decisions. To ensure we remain highly responsive to our students' immediate needs, we also utilise 'spotlight' lessons; these allow us to deliver bespoke, targeted sessions to directly address and action any specific issues that may arise within a particular cohort. Alongside this, our broader curriculum seamlessly weaves together statutory Relationships and Health Education (RSHE), vital safeguarding messages, and spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development. Furthermore, we actively promote British Values and celebrate diversity through the 'No Outsiders' curriculum, helping children understand how these core principles are demonstrated in both daily school life and the wider community.

To ensure every child is well-prepared for later life, our curriculum follows the EYFS Statutory Framework in the early years and the National Curriculum throughout KS1 and KS2. In Years 1 through 6, PSHCE is delivered through a discrete, timetabled weekly lesson that builds progressively upon the previous year's knowledge. This is supported by a wider curriculum of weekly wellbeing starters and dedicated awareness days. Above all, our PSHCE offer is highly ambitious and inclusive; we carefully adapt our pedagogy so that all learners, particularly disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, gain vital cultural capital and travel the exact same knowledge journey toward the same endpoints. To further enrich this experience, our core lessons are enhanced by Woodland Learning and impactful real-world visits from the NSPCC, health professionals, and emergency services.

Relationships and Health Education/ Relationships and Sex Education (RHE/RSE)

As per government guidance, Relationships and Health education is fully integrated into our PSHCE scheme of work. Lessons that show coverage of these objectives are highlighted in yellow on the scheme overview. Some of these lessons are based upon the Christopher Wynter scheme of work (e.g. use of cartoon images and some activities), but all lessons have been adapted to meet the needs of our communities and cohorts.

All lessons included are statutory and meet the objectives outlined in the Relationships and Health Education curriculum. Additional Relationships and Sex Education resources have also been planned for but are not a part of the yearly overview. Parents/carers still have the right to withdraw from any lessons classed as Sex Education.

All lessons have been planned to be delivered in an age appropriate way and fall in line with the school's Relationships and Sex Education Policy. This can be found in the POLICIES section of the website. More detailed coverage can also by found below the the curriculum overview document.

PSHCE Curriculum

Relationships and Sex Education

The pupils gain knowledge and skills when learning about Relationships, Healthy Living and Living in the Wider World. An essential part of the PSHE programme is Relationships Education and this is compulsory for all primary school children.  As part of the Year 6 curriculum, we also deliver sessions on sex education.  The lessons are at an appropriate level for the age range and will use resources that will support the learning.  Teachers will use the Medway RSE resources.   We will contact you prior to these sessions and invite you to look at the resources if you so wish.  If you wish to view the resources that will be used, please click on the links below.

*Please note delivery may differ slightly, with some schools choosing to deliver year 5 and 6 lessons with boys and girls together.

No Outsiders

All year groups, from Reception to Year 6, follow the No Outsiders curriculum. This program teaches the Equality Act through a carefully selected set of age-appropriate stories designed to support children’s understanding of diversity and equality. Links to these stories can be found on the curriculum overview document; additionally, the interactive link below provides useful reference points for discussing these themes with children.
