Our Early Years Curriculum: Intent, Implementation & Impact

At REMAT schools, we provide a high-quality, ambitious education that ensures every child – regardless of background – reaches their full potential. Our Early Years provision sparks a lifelong love for learning, building happy, curious individuals who are fully prepared for the next stage of their education.
Intent: What We Aim to Achieve
We intend for every child to make outstanding progress through a carefully sequenced, balanced curriculum. By blending ambitious adult-directed learning with uninterrupted play and exploration, we ensure children learn more, remember more, and do more.

Implementation: How We Deliver Our Vision
Our curriculum is guided by the four overarching principles of the Early Years Framework:
-
A Unique Child: We recognise every child as a resilient, confident learner, identifying and supporting additional needs early through strong parent partnerships.
-
Positive Relationships: We build respectful bonds with families, supported by our Key Person system and local children’s centres.
-
Enabling Environments: We use rich, stimulating indoor and outdoor spaces to continually assess and extend children's learning.
-
Learning and Development: We value and interconnect all seven areas of learning.
The 7 Areas of Learning
We deliver our curriculum through targeted, proven educational frameworks:
-
Communication & Language: Built on an oracy-based literacy curriculum with daily stories and songs. We use the Wellcomm programme for early intervention to ensure no child slips behind.
-
Physical Development: Promoted through daily outdoor access, weekly Forest School, PE sessions, and Balanceability training.
-
Personal, Social & Emotional Development (PSED): Supported by our school behaviour blueprint, weekly celebration times, and the Zones of Regulation framework to build emotional literacy.
-
Literacy: We use Read Write Inc. (RWI) starting in Nursery to ensure children can read and write short sentences by the end of Reception. A love of reading is fostered through our "Talk Through Stories" and "Favourite Five" texts.
-
Mathematics: Taught using a Number Sense approach to build deep mathematical understanding, reinforced through focused environment enhancements.
-
Understanding the World: A topic-based approach featuring local museum and gallery visits to boost cultural capital, alongside weekly Forest School sessions.
-
Expressive Arts & Design: Children freely explore art, music, movement, dance, and role-play with a wide variety of resources.

Modern Enhancements for Modern Learners
We constantly evolve our curriculum to prepare children for life in the modern world:
-
Inclusivity & Equality: Diverse representation via our "Favourite Five" texts, Picture News, and resources that reflect a multi-cultural community.
-
Sustainability: Active recycling stations, junk modelling, Bird Watches, and Outdoor Classroom days.
-
Digital Skills: Focused iPad inputs and online safety workshops for parents.
-
Community & Culture: Close family links via half-termly "Stay and Plays," community visitors, and church links.
Impact: The Difference We Make
Our curriculum meets the needs of all children, allowing them to make exceptional progress from their individual starting points. By the end of the Reception year, the vast majority of our pupils reach national expectations and make a seamless, confident transition into Year 1.

How We Measure Impact
We continuously evaluate our success through a mix of:
-
Ongoing observational assessments.
-
Learning walks and coaching trackers.
-
Formative and summative data analysis.
-
Regular feedback from staff, pupils, and parents.
