Well done Layton. Enjoy your Easter Egg!

Year 2 Fieldwork : Urban and Rural Locations

Date: 27th Mar 2024 @ 5:39pm

Today, year 2 completed their Geography unit by spending the day working geographically in two contrasting locations on the Wirral Peninsula. Firstly, we visited Oxton village and recorded the human and physical features that we could see, made a tally chart of these and played eye spy! We had some very amused passers-by! We then continued on to our second location of Thurstaston coast. Here we repeated the earlier tasks, including some sketching and a ranger led walk. We had a fantastic day and I'm sure we will all sleep well tonight - I think it's safe to say that we have some brilliant geographers amongst us in Year 2. Well done everyone.

2MJ British Science Week

Date: 14th Mar 2024 @ 7:45pm

British Science Week ~ Time

For British Science Week we decided to play 'Metamorphosis Mayhem' which tied in nicely with our topic on animals including humans. We have been looking at life cycles and in particular this week, the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog. The children really enjoyed playing a game of rock, paper, scissors and moving through the different life stages of both a frog and a butterfly. They enjoyed competing with friends and observing who was going to make it to the final stage in the life cycle.
All of the children developed their knowledge of the different parts of both life cycles and learnt what the term 'metamorphosis' means. Well done 2MJ, I am sure you will remember this game as highlight of Year 2 as you all enjoyed it so much.

2MJ Science Live Lesson

Date: 14th Mar 2024 @ 7:31pm

Today, we took part in a live live lesson, delivered by TechSheCan. The lesson was all about 'Science in Sport'. The children learnt about wearables. These are things that people can wear when completing sports to track things such as, heart rate, temperature and speed. The children had a go at designing their own wearables and what data it would track. We also looked at how AI and other sciences are heavily involved in influencing different sports. Children were given the opportunity to explore different jobs within sports science and technology, to hopefully inspire future scientis

NSPCC Workshop

Date: 8th Mar 2024 @ 3:03pm

Yesterday we had an NSPCC workshop in class. We learnt some really valuable information.

NSPCC supports children to help them understand that abuse is never their fault, and that they have the right to be safe.

With the help of a mascot Buddy, the Speak out Stay safe programme covers topics like bullying and abuse - without using any scary words or adult language.

Children learn about the different types of abuse in a child-friendly and age appropriate way, so they can get help if or when they need it. It helps them identify safe adults they can talk to if they're ever worried about themselves or a friend. And they learnt about Childline, and how it can support them.

The children listened really well and impressed the visitors with how much information they learnt during the session! Well done 2MJ.

2MJ World Book Day

2MJ Science

Date: 4th Dec 2023 @ 11:52am

In Science, we have been learning how animals have adapted to survive in their different habitats, The children completed a lesson in groups, They had to be 'running reporters' and take it in turns to find facts about their groups animals and read their fact to their friends. They really took an active part in this lesson and were able to find out lots of different behavioural and physical adaptations animals have made.

They discovered that Tapirs eyes are small and deep set so they are protected from insects and bits of twig etc.

The children also learnt that polar bears are great swimmers, making it easy for them to catch fish to eat.

We will continue to learn about animals adaptations over the next few weeks of term.

2MJ Land Art Sculptures

Date: 26th Nov 2023 @ 6:05pm

In art & design, we have been looking at the sculpturist - Andy Goldsworthy. We have taken inspiration from his use of natural objects to create our own land art.

2MJ Art - Observational Drawings

Date: 19th Nov 2023 @ 10:12pm

In art & design, we have been looking at the sculpturist - Andy Goldsworthy. We have taken inspiration from his use of natural objects to create observational drawings. After learning how to create different tones, using a 2B pencil and applying different amounts of pressure to create light, mid and dark tones, we created amazing observational drawings of natural objects.

2MJ Children In Need Day

Date: 17th Nov 2023 @ 12:51pm

We enjoyed wearing Children In Need accessories today. This year will mark the 43rd TV appeal to raise money for disadvantaged children and young people around the UK, In class we talked about this charity and how it helps others.

2MJ Science

Date: 16th Nov 2023 @ 3:54pm

Today during our Science lesson we learnt all about the Amazon Rainforest. We looked at the different layers of the rainforest and learnt about the living things that live and grow in each layer. The children took part in this lesson by using iPads by researching information about each layer, what it is called, what animals and plants live in each layer and what the weather is like. The children learnt lots of facts about the rainforest and enjoyed taking part in the quiz at the end all about habitats.

Year 2 - Woodlice Investigation

Date: 10th Nov 2023 @ 12:51pm

In science, the children have been learning about microhabitats.

For our investigation, the children had to find out what type of microhabitat woodlice would prefer.

3 types of micrhabitats in the investigation:

  1. Wet leaves and stones (damp and dark)
  2. Wet sand (damp and light)
  3. Dry stones (dry and dark)

The children places the woodlice in the centre of the box with the three different types of microhabitats and observed where they would go. The children counted how many woodlice were in each microhabitat after 1, 2 and 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, the children found out that the woodlice preferred to be in wet leaves and stones because the conditions were damp and dark.

Poppies for Remembrance Day

Date: 7th Nov 2023 @ 6:20pm

Today, to honour our armed forces, we created poppies using plastic bottles and acrylic paint. We discussed that poppies have been a symbol of the First World War since the 1920's and the red of the poppies symbolises hope. Our Poppies are going on display at St. Luke's Church (bombed out church), in Liverpool, over the weekend.

2MJ Junior STEM

Date: 20th Oct 2023 @ 2:23pm

We had a fantastic time in Y2 completing a Lego Fairground Workshop with Junior Stem.

First, we learnt the basic commands needed to program the Lego Wedo 2.0 software while making a simple model of our own design.

In the second part of the workshop we followed instructions to build the Fairground ride for the mini figures. Finally, we were encouraged to experiment with the programming as well as decorating and upgrading our ride to make it even more exciting.

The sounds of ‘ooo’ and ‘arrrr’ that tell you that the children have been wowed were brilliant to listen to throughout the workshops. The children were fully engaged with what they were doing and they had time to explore and investigate by themselves, making sure it was a fully hands on experience. The software was excellent, the Lego packs were brilliant and Nick the leader was amazing. A truly memorable day for our Y2 children.

2MJ Vehicles

Date: 17th Oct 2023 @ 10:36pm

2MJ Holy Books

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 8:22pm

This term our topic in RE is Holy Books. This week we learnt about the religion Sikhism. The children learnt that the holy book for Sikhism is called the Guru Granth Sahib. They also learnt how Sikhs show respect to their holy book by washing their hands, covering their heads, carrying the holy book on their head and putting it to bed at night. They discovered that the Guru Granth Sahib is respected in the same way as a human and when it is not being used it is covered up with a cloth. They also learnt about the chaur sahib and how this is used to fan the scriptures as a sign of respect. The children enjoyed role playing waving this as Sikhs would do to the Guru Granth Sahib.

2MJ Computing

Date: 8th Oct 2023 @ 8:13pm

Our topic in computing this term is 'Computing Systems and Networks' and during this lesson we were learning about how information technology improves our world. The children were investigating IT that is used in supermarkets and specifically barcodes. The children learnt about barcodes and how they speed up shopping trips and how they send information to the till to tell you how much something costs. The children worked well with their partner to use an iPad to complete this activity. They have learnt how to log on and add text boxes and use the tools on the seesaw app. They really enjoy their computing lessons and developing their knowledge of controlling iPads.
