Key Stage 2 Visit from the RNLI

This week, Key Stage 2 enjoyed a wonderful extended 'water safety' assembly by Sean and Andy, Lifeguards from the RNLI.

In Year 4, we have been looking at food chains and identifying producers, consumers, predators and prey. We have also studied the digestive system. This week, we dissected an owl pellet, which is the undigested part of an owl's food that is regurgitated. We were able to identify what the owl's prey was. It was very interesting!!

In science, we have been learning about the digestive system. We identified each part and explained its function. We used some things to help visualise this.

This week, Year 4 attended an orchestral performance at the Philharmonic. The theme was ‘Going for Gold’ and was inspired by the Paris 2024 Olympic. Each piece cleverly represented a different sport by using the different instruments in the orchestra. The children really enjoyed this experience and had the chance to be the conductor and sing along with the orchestra.

This morning, we had a fantastic workshop delivered by JuniorSTEM. The children thoroughly enjoyed
this and it really enhanced their understanding of our comupting topic. They were building robots and using codes and algorithms to move them.

In science, children have been studying electricity. They have using their knowledge of circuits and electrons to build a simple circuit, with a bulb that works.

This half term, Year 4 are working towards building their skills and knowledge to design and make a healthy pitta pizza. As part of this, the children were learning how to peel, chop, slice, spread and grate foods during their DT lesson this week. We learnt different techniques such as the claw and the bridge grip.

Year 4 led this week’s KS2 assembly about their work in PSHE on no outsiders and how this links with our British values.

On Wednesday, we were fortunate to have an illustrator come in to show us how to draw faces and figures. We applied these skills and started to draw Roman soldiers. This was a fantastic opportunity to enrich their art knowledge and skills. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and are going to put what they learnt into practice in their next art lesson.

Our topic in geography is about rivers. Yesterday, we looked at the importance of rivers. We ranked the most to least important uses of rivers and explained them to the class.
4D - Science (sound investigation)

In art, we are working towards doing Roman inspired mosaics. We started by sketching a Spartan soldier.

For our map task in geography, we used an atlas to locate the River Volga in Russia. We were able to identify facts about Russia and the river.

In science, our topic is sound. In the last lesson, we looked at the different parts of the ear and how sound travels to the brain.

This half term, our English work is focussed on the book 'The Journey'. We created freeze frames for different parts of the story, focussing on the feelings of the characters.

Last half term, we planned, designed and created shell structures. We evaluated the effectiveness of our 3D boxes and thought about what we would do next time.

In class, we have been using the plastic bottles that we brought in to make poppies. We cut the bottom of them off and used acrylic paint to paint the inside. We spoke about the meaning of poppies and Remembrance day.
