Children have been learning about Walter Tull.
They learnt how WWI impacted on Walter Tull’s life and his s significance due to his military achievements.
Children worked in partners to create a timeline based on these key events in his life:
- Walter Tull joined the army in 1914 - in the Footballers’ Battalion.
- The conditions for soldiers were unhygienic and cramped.
- Walter Tull was treated for shellshock in 1916 and was sent home for 3 months.
- Walter Tull was sent to the Battle of the Somme in October 1916
- Walter Tull was promoted to officer in 1916 - the first black man to ever be given such a title.
- Walter Tull was killed on 25th March 1918 in the second Battle of the Somme.
