RJ - Emperor Penguins (Science & UTW)

Lesson: Science

Class: RJ - Miss Johnson Year: 2023 - 2024

This week, we had an exciting visitor in our classroom. A penguin egg appeared and we had to take care of it to see if we could grow our own baby penguin. After taking very good care, the penguin hatched and we had another member in our class. We learned lots of new facts about emperor penguins - they are almost as tall as us! Following this, we explored the lifecycle of a penguin and created our own cycle using our new friend.

We also explored how penguins and other animals keep warm in the winter. We know lots of animals hibernate but penguins have a thick layer of fat called blubber. We completed an experiment to show what it feels like to have blubber - we could not feel the freezing cold water.
