Art: Great Fire of London Lessons 3 and 4

Date: 21st Nov 2020 @ 6:06pm

We have really been enjoying our art lessons this week.  After sketching Tudor houses in charcoal and then recreating them with strips of black paper, we started experimenting with different media (tissue paper, chalk, oil pastels and pencils) to create a fire effect for the background of our finished piece of artwork. We discovered that chalk was very easy to blend and made an excellent fire effect, whilst tissue paper gave the fire a deeper, more intense effect.

We began our final pieces (inspired by Rita Greer's painting) by blending yellow, orange and red chalk over a pre-paint washed piece of A3 cartridge paper and blended those colours as if our lives depended on it.  Next week, we will be adding our charcoal and paper Tudor houses and tissue paper fire.  We're certain our finished pieces will turn out brilliantly,

Art: Hans Holbein

Date: 20th Nov 2020 @ 1:08pm

We are so lucky to have a sketchbook to record all our findings and artwork. We have been studying the work of Hans Holbein who created portraits of Kings and Queens. We have been focusing on tone, colour and shading. Look at some of the examples of amazing artwork 4MB have created.

Making Sandwiches

Date: 20th Nov 2020 @ 8:22am

The children really enjoyed making their own sandwiches after watching an instructional video from our school cook Mrs Evans!

Art: Great Fire of London Lessons 1 and 2

Date: 18th Nov 2020 @ 9:11pm

Today we began our block of art lessons.  We started by looking at the paintings of English artist Rita Greer and in particular her 2008 painting of the Great Fire of London.  Over the next two weeks, we are going to be creating our own pictures of the Great Fire of London using different media to create the background, the houses and the fire.

This afternoon, we did some observational drawings of Tudor houses using charcoal, we even managed not to create a huge mess and Mrs Simmons was very impressed.  Have a look at our wonderful drawings (the first is Rita Greer's painting that we will be recreating in our own way).

The next day, we recreated our charcoal Tudor houses with strips of black paper.  What do you think...?

Skipping

Date: 18th Nov 2020 @ 9:01pm

Today we had a skipping lesson from a gentleman that came in to school.  It was really good fun and most of us managed to skip successfully though it was quite tricky trying to remember to jump at the right time.  Sadly, we missed the last 5 minutes of our lesson because it started to rain heavily.  Mrs Simmons tried really hard to get some great action shots but unfortunately, the iPad didn't want to work properly.

Cricket Week 2

Date: 17th Nov 2020 @ 9:22pm

Today (Tuesday 17th November 2020) we had our second cricket lesson with Mr Rickman.

Firstly, we were grouped into threes with one of us as the batter, one as the bowler and one as the fielder.  We learnt that we must hold the cricket bat with our dominant hand (usually the hand we write with) at the bottom of the handle as that gives us a lot more control.

After we had practised for a while, we were split into two teams and had a mini game of cricket.  What a lot of fun it was!  We can't wait for next week...

Anti-Bullying Week : Odd Sock Day

Date: 17th Nov 2020 @ 9:19pm

Today (Monday 16th November) we came to school in odd socks.  This is because from Monday 16th November to Friday 20th November 2020, it is Anti-Bullying Week.  Wearing odd socks is a great way to celebrate what makes us all unique.

Creating habitats for woodlice.

Date: 16th Nov 2020 @ 10:56pm

We created four different habitats for woodlice. We wanted to find out which habitat they preferred.

5A Yoga (Indoor PE Autumn 2)

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 9:28am

This term, 5A have embarked upon a new unit of learning for their indoor PE lessons. They have been learning Yoga! The first lesson was a super introduction and the children learnt how to present the correcting sitting position, as well as master the Sun Salutation. Watch the video below to see our final Yoga flow.

Music - Autumn 2 - Jazz - Bossa Nova

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 9:22am

As part of our new unit of learning this term, we are learning about Jazz music. In this lesson, we learnt about the Bossa Nova, meaning 'new trend' and its origins from Brazil. We used the glockenspeil to play the 3-note Bosss Nova!

Maths - Autumn 2 - Square & Cube Numbers

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 9:17am

We are having fun exploring through concrete materials and discussion! Through the new scheme ;Maths, No Problem', Year 5 will learn about Multiplication and Division. In addition, lessons will focus on more Year 5 essentials maths skills: Square numbers, Cube numbers, Prime numbers, Factors/Common Factors and multiplying a number by 10, 100 and 1000. We have used multi-cubes to investigate square and cube numbers.

Science - Autumn 2 - Air Resistance Investigation

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 9:00am

As part of the Year 5 Forces unit of study in Science, children learnt about air-resistance and the effect of drag in different contexts. In particular, we investigated air-resistance in parachutes and designed 3 different parachutes, each with a different canopy size. We measured the time it took for the parachute to land for a given height.

Science - Autumn 2 - Water Resistance Investigation

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 8:26am

Year 5 children investigated water resistance this term and worked in groups to design 3 boats of different shapes. They timed the legnth of time their boats travelled over water propelled by a hand dryer. The children considered fair testing and what they will need to keep the same (length of water travelled, sail, material used etc) and what they are changing: shape of boat. The polystyrene was incredibly messy, but they all enjoyed creating boats and recording measurements too!

Poppy Day

Date: 12th Nov 2020 @ 8:22am

The children learnt about why we wear poppies and made some poppies of their own using various materials.

Adverts

Date: 11th Nov 2020 @ 9:25pm

Today (11.11.2020), we looked at adverts and the methods they use to try and persuade people to buy their products.  We thought about emotive language and they ways advertisers draw us in to being interested in their products.  We then worked with our away partners to come up with a short advert to try and sell the most obscure items we could find in our classroom.

The photos show us trying to sell the items to our classmates and Mrs Simmons.

Cricket

Date: 10th Nov 2020 @ 9:12pm

We were lucky enough to be chosen with Year 3 to have one PE session a week (Tuesday) to learn cricket (this is up until Christmas).  A gentleman called Mr Rickman came into school to teach us.

Today (10.11.2020), we started with throwing a catching tennis balls then we progressed onto games where we had to balance a ball on a cricket bat and walk with it and also throwing a ball to try and hit a wicket.  It was such fun and we can't wait until PE next Tuesday.

Yoga

Date: 10th Nov 2020 @ 8:53pm

We have started yoga every Friday in P.E.  We had our first session on 6.11.2020 and we all loved it.  It was very calming and relaxing.  We concentrated on our sitting and meditating poses, balance and stretches.

Starting division by grouping

Date: 8th Nov 2020 @ 4:46pm

Today (6.11.2020) we started to look at and investigate division (dividing 1 and 2 digit numbers by a 1 digit number) by sharing and grouping items.  We learnt that division is the inverse of multiplication and that we can use our times tables knowledge to check our answers are correct.  We found out that you can't divide some numbers equally and for division, it has to be equal.  It was lots of fun to work with our away partner to decide which numbers can be divided easily.  We also found out that all even numbers can always be divided by 2 and 24 can be divided 6 different ways!

Woodland Learning

Date: 7th Nov 2020 @ 2:42pm

We had a fantastic time toasting marshmallows and eating them in the forest.

We understand how to be safe around fire.

Minibeasts in their microhabitats

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 9:18pm

Our new Science topic 'Living things and their habitats took us outside the classroom today.

In our first lesson (yesterday) we learnt about things that are alive, dead and those that have never been alive.  We looked at the 7 'Life Processes' that all living things do to show that they are alive.  We used the mnemonic 'MRS GREN' to remember what the processes are.

Movement

Respiration (breathing)

Sensitivity (feeling)

Growth

Reproduction

Excretion (getting rid of waste)

Nutrition (need for food/water)

In today's lesson, we spent a little while in our woodland area hunting for minibeasts in their microhabitats..  We know that habitats are natural homes/places  where animals, plants and other living things live.  We learned today that tiny creatures like insects live in 'microhabitats' so we went on a hunt for some.

We lifted up logs, looked in the grass and soil, looked under fallen leaves, rocks and stones and found lots of different minibeasts like slugs, spiders, ants, woodlice and worms.  We were very careful to put their habitat back to how we found it after we had seen them.

Fundamentals

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 5:09pm

In PE we were taking part in a variety of different activities which improved our balance and co-ordination.

Sikhism

Date: 5th Nov 2020 @ 4:50pm

This term we studied Sikhism. Here are some photos of the children researching gurus.

Geography

21st September 2020

Over the last two weeks the children have been learning all about the local area. Below there are a series of pictures that will showcase the learning that has taken place.

Lesson 1

The children started with locating the 4 countires in the United Kingdom.

Lesson 2

In lesson 2 the children found out that the 4 countries in the United Kingdom have capital cities and they also found out about the seas surrounding the UK.

Lesson 3

In lesson 3 we looked at our local area and used Google Maps to help us to locate points of interest in our area.

Lesson 4

In this lesson we looked at the land uses of areas. We found out some new vocabulary including  public services, open spaces and economic. The children were able to organise piictures in a table under the correct headings.

Lesson 5

In lesson 5 the children looked at physical and human features of land. They learnt that physical features are those that are natural and human features are either influenced or created by humans.

Lesson 6

In lesson 6 we learnt about the seven continents of the world. We learnt that we live in Europe. We also found out that Asia is the largest continent and Australia is the smallest.

We listened to a song to help us to remember the names of the continents.

PSHE

Date: 3rd Nov 2020 @ 8:14pm

PSHE

We had lots of dicussion during our first PSHE lesson. We are learning about relationships. In our first lesson we had lfun looking at and sorting a variety of images, we were then asked to use some new vocabulary during our discussions such as; 'likes', 'dislikes' and 'I prefer'. Throughout this lesson, we discovered that we do not all like or dislike the same things, but this is ok because these are the things that make us 'unique'

Exploring healthy and unhealthy foods: 3.11.20

The children were able to sort the images into healthy and unhealthy groups.

3rd December.

We have been learning about the importance of hand washing and keeping germs away.

We used glitter to represent germs and to see how quickly germs can spread around the classroom.

Maths

Date: 3rd Nov 2020 @ 8:12pm

MATHS

This week we have launched our brand new maths curriculum; Maths No Problem. The children have been learning different ways of counting, counting and ordering numbers in the ascending order, counting and ordering numbers in descending order and using objects to reflect this, they have recorded their learning in a JOURNAL!  The journal is a book where the children can show how they have understood a concept by writing numbers and including their own versions of pictorial represtations for these. We have been learning through our numbers in a fun and active way and we have loved it!
