Cricket Week 3

Date: 24th Nov 2020 @ 10:59pm

We had our third cricket lesson today and we learnt how to bowl like a proper cricketer.  Mr Rickman taught us how to stand and to try and keep our arms straight when bowling the ball.  We did find this a little tricky but continued to persevere and both Mrs Simmons and Mr Rickman were very impressed with how focussed we were and how much better we got just in one lesson.

We had lots of practise and then played a group game where we had to bowl the ball into a box and try and hit the wicket too.  It was a big challenge but lots of us managed to do it.

Art: Great Fire of London Lessons 3 and 4

Date: 21st Nov 2020 @ 6:06pm

We have really been enjoying our art lessons this week.  After sketching Tudor houses in charcoal and then recreating them with strips of black paper, we started experimenting with different media (tissue paper, chalk, oil pastels and pencils) to create a fire effect for the background of our finished piece of artwork. We discovered that chalk was very easy to blend and made an excellent fire effect, whilst tissue paper gave the fire a deeper, more intense effect.

We began our final pieces (inspired by Rita Greer's painting) by blending yellow, orange and red chalk over a pre-paint washed piece of A3 cartridge paper and blended those colours as if our lives depended on it.  Next week, we will be adding our charcoal and paper Tudor houses and tissue paper fire.  We're certain our finished pieces will turn out brilliantly,

Art: Hans Holbein

We are so lucky to have a sketchbook to record all our findings and artwork. We have been studying the work of Hans Holbein who created portraits of Kings and Queens. We have been focusing on tone, colour and shading. Look at some of the examples of amazing artwork 4MB have created.

Art: Great Fire of London Lessons 1 and 2

Date: 18th Nov 2020 @ 9:11pm

Today we began our block of art lessons.  We started by looking at the paintings of English artist Rita Greer and in particular her 2008 painting of the Great Fire of London.  Over the next two weeks, we are going to be creating our own pictures of the Great Fire of London using different media to create the background, the houses and the fire.

This afternoon, we did some observational drawings of Tudor houses using charcoal, we even managed not to create a huge mess and Mrs Simmons was very impressed.  Have a look at our wonderful drawings (the first is Rita Greer's painting that we will be recreating in our own way).

The next day, we recreated our charcoal Tudor houses with strips of black paper.  What do you think...?

Skipping

Date: 18th Nov 2020 @ 9:01pm

Today we had a skipping lesson from a gentleman that came in to school.  It was really good fun and most of us managed to skip successfully though it was quite tricky trying to remember to jump at the right time.  Sadly, we missed the last 5 minutes of our lesson because it started to rain heavily.  Mrs Simmons tried really hard to get some great action shots but unfortunately, the iPad didn't want to work properly.

Cricket Week 2

Date: 17th Nov 2020 @ 9:22pm

Today (Tuesday 17th November 2020) we had our second cricket lesson with Mr Rickman.

Firstly, we were grouped into threes with one of us as the batter, one as the bowler and one as the fielder.  We learnt that we must hold the cricket bat with our dominant hand (usually the hand we write with) at the bottom of the handle as that gives us a lot more control.

After we had practised for a while, we were split into two teams and had a mini game of cricket.  What a lot of fun it was!  We can't wait for next week...

Anti-Bullying Week : Odd Sock Day

Today (Monday 16th November) we came to school in odd socks.  This is because from Monday 16th November to Friday 20th November 2020, it is Anti-Bullying Week.  Wearing odd socks is a great way to celebrate what makes us all unique.

Watch the video below to see our final Yoga flow.

We are having fun exploring through concrete materials and discussion! Through the new scheme ;Maths, No Problem', Year 5 will learn about Multiplication and Division. In addition, lessons will focus on more Year 5 essentials maths skills: Square numbers, Cube numbers, Prime numbers, Factors/Common Factors and multiplying a number by 10, 100 and 1000. We have used multi-cubes to investigate square and cube numbers.

Science - Autumn 2 - Air Resistance Investigation

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 9:00am

As part of the Year 5 Forces unit of study in Science, children learnt about air-resistance and the effect of drag in different contexts. In particular, we investigated air-resistance in parachutes and designed 3 different parachutes, each with a different canopy size. We measured the time it took for the parachute to land for a given height.

Science - Autumn 2 - Water Resistance Investigation

Date: 15th Nov 2020 @ 8:26am

Year 5 children investigated water resistance this term and worked in groups to design 3 boats of different shapes. They timed the legnth of time their boats travelled over water propelled by a hand dryer. The children considered fair testing and what they will need to keep the same (length of water travelled, sail, material used etc) and what they are changing: shape of boat. The polystyrene was incredibly messy, but they all enjoyed creating boats and recording measurements too!

Poppy Day

Date: 12th Nov 2020 @ 8:22am

The children learnt about why we wear poppies and made some poppies of their own using various materials.

Adverts

Date: 11th Nov 2020 @ 9:25pm

Today (11.11.2020), we looked at adverts and the methods they use to try and persuade people to buy their products.  We thought about emotive language and they ways advertisers draw us in to being interested in their products.  We then worked with our away partners to come up with a short advert to try and sell the most obscure items we could find in our classroom.

The photos show us trying to sell the items to our classmates and Mrs Simmons.

Cricket

Date: 10th Nov 2020 @ 9:12pm

We were lucky enough to be chosen with Year 3 to have one PE session a week (Tuesday) to learn cricket (this is up until Christmas).  A gentleman called Mr Rickman came into school to teach us.

Today (10.11.2020), we started with throwing a catching tennis balls then we progressed onto games where we had to balance a ball on a cricket bat and walk with it and also throwing a ball to try and hit a wicket.  It was such fun and we can't wait until PE next Tuesday.
