1C Marvellous Materials in Science

Date: 14th Nov 2021 @ 7:40pm

Science

Our science topic this term has been 'Marbvellous Materials' Our lessons began with the arrival of some penguins trapped inside blocks of ice! We had to  think of the best way to release the penguins without physically smashing up the ice After a short discussion, we decided that the best way to release them without harming them would be to melt the ice. As a class, we decided to investigate which of our ideas would melt the ice the quickest; 1, holding it in our hands, 1, licking it, 3, blowing on it, 4, wrapping it up in material. we had a discussion about how to make this a fair test. So, we made sure that we kept everything except where we were melting the ice the same.Once we had planned our experiment, we made some predictions and were able to explain epredictions. We then performed the investigation and observed the ice melting ove a 30 minute period. We recoreded our findings into a table of results. We discovered that the ice melted much more quickly in our hands because our hands were very warm.

Science enquiry 2

Before starting our second inquiry, we had a mini quiz using our knowledge organisers. The teacher asked us questions and we had to find the answers on our knowledge organisers. This helped us to remeber facts from our previous learning.

In our second enquiry, we investigated whether the aerea of the classroom would effect the rate of melting a block of ice. We planned this experiment through discussion as a whole class and agreed on the areas of the room that we would place 5 blocks of ice (on the window ledge, by the fan, on the radiator, on the teacher's desk and by the door. Again, we made prediction on the order that the ice would melt from quickest to slowest), We used Ipads to time the rate of melting and recorded our results in a table. We discovered that the ice on the radiator  melted much quicker than the other areas, however, the ice on the teacher's desk was not far behind! Our results were recorded into tables in our books. We made observations, predictions and conclusions and again checked to see if our predictions were correct or incorrect.

1C Maths - Subtraction

Date: 26th Oct 2021 @ 3:23pm

October 2021 - Maths- Subtraction within 10.

We have been learning lots of different ways to subtract; Counting back, using a number line, writing sutraction stories, using our fingers, drawing pictorial representations, using a number bond diagram (part, part, whole) and writng subtraction sentences. We have also been using manipulatives to help us when we need them. As you can see, we are still in the aerly stages and making a few little errors, but errors are good! They help us learn.

1C RE - Harvest

Date: 26th Oct 2021 @ 2:44pm

In RE we have been learning all about Harvest. We have learned all about how we can help other's who are in need  by sending a cow, giving foods to food banks and sending clothes.

We paid particular attention to how Harvest is celebrated in Islam by exploring Sukkot.

Sukkot is a week-long festival in the Autumn and is held after the harvest has been gathered. In  preparation for Sukkot, Jewish people build a makeshift outdoor shelter and decorate it with fruit and other decorations. The shelter (Sukkah) has to be covered with branches and leaves and the sky must be visable through the roof so they are reminded of the presence of God in the heavens as a reminder of the impermanence of the construction. Families eat their meals in the Sukkah each day. Those families from warmer climates actually sleep in the Sukkah for the entire festival.

Particular objects are key symbols in the celebration of the festival:
- A lulav (a collection of branches of palm, willow and myrtle) - the lulav is waved in 6 directions to show that God is everywhere; north, east, south, west, north west, and a cross formation, . Each object holds it own symbolism as follows:

- The palm - symbolises the spine

-The willow- symbolises the lips

-The myrtle - symbolises the eyes

- An etrog - a lemon type fruit which symbolises the heart

These serve as a reminder that Jewish people must worship God with all parts of their body.

Here are the children creating their own mini sukkah using, card, tape, sticks and leaves. The  children had so much fun making them!

1C Major Glad, Major Dizzy journey

Date: 26th Oct 2021 @ 2:11pm

In Year 1, we have been exploring a book called Major Glad, Major Dizzy. The story is about two old toy soldiers who have been lost under some floorboards for a long time. We have learnt so much based on this story such as; learning what a noun is and describing the noun using adjectives,

We used speech to ask and answer questions. We also learnt about how to use time adverbials to sequence events within a short story

Learning about and using new vocabulary in our wriitng,

We have been learning how to answer comprehension questions by finding the answers within a text and tesxt marking as well as using our inference skills.

And even planning and writing our own version of a lost toy story. For our stories, we created a plan to show the four parts of the story and then we used the plan to help us to write the story.

Our next sequence of learning will include; learning how to reply to a short letter.

1C History Explorers

Date: 17th Oct 2021 @ 8:36pm

In our history unit this term, we have been learning all about two very famous explorers.

Christopher Columbus. First, to generate a discussion around who our first mystery person could be, we looked at some artefacts to give us some clues. We discovered that this mystery person must have been a traveller. We thought this because there was a compass, a globe, a map and a telescope. Our next task was to think of some questions that we would like to ask this person. We used open-ended questions so that we could find out more about them. Next, we were introduced to a portrait of Christopher Columbus and watched a short video about one of his most famous voyages. We learnt a lot of facts about him and created a simple fact-file. Here are some below;

Once we had learned all about Christopher Columbus' voyage, we made comparisons about his journey a present-day sea journey.

We discovered that we would much prefer a modern-day sea journey!!!

IMG_0188.JPG  IMG_0189.JPG  IMG_0197.JPG  IMG_0198.JPG

Our next famous explorer was Neil Armstrong. We found out that he was the first man to ever walk on the moon!!!!! We watched footage of his famous mission, looked at what the surface of the moon is like (it is NOT made from cheese!). We created a list of all of the things that Armstrong would have needed to take to the moon with him.

Our final task was to compare the two explorers and their missions. We compared the places that they went, how they travelled, what they accomplished and how people remember them now! We discovered that although Christopher Columbus was popular at first because he  found the Americas, once people found out that he had stolen all of the people's riches and made the locals do ALL of the horrid jobs on board his ship, people changed their opinion of him. Neil Armstrong was very popular and people really liked him, his mission changed the world for ever!!!

1C Computing

Date: 17th Oct 2021 @ 7:48pm

Today we have been learning how to use the trackpad (mouse) on a laptop to draw a sketch of ourselves. We have then explored how to add text to a picture. We found this activity quite tricky, but, with some extra practise, we will get better!

1C Reading

Date: 5th Oct 2021 @ 7:45pm

In 1C, we are enjoying using our new reading area. We love spending our free time choosing and reading a range of books in a variety of ways such as; In our reading area, At our tables, On the carpet, With a partner, In small groups, To our class, With an adult and even outdoors!

IMG_0223.JPG  IMG_0175.JPG  IMG_0180(1).JPG   IMG_0182.JPG

We have recently been introduced to Roald Dhal and have a fantastic selection of his books that we can both listen to and read ourselves. As we were unable to choose which Roald Dahl book to have as our 'shared class book' at story time, we had a class vote! We had a explored the front covers and the blurbs on each of the books and posted our names onto the book that we thought we would like to listen to. The winner for this term was The Witches.

IMG_0037.JPG   IMG_0040.JPG   IMG_0042.JPG   IMG_0043.JPG   IMG_0044.JPG

We have been talking about and drawing the front covers of our favourite books that we have read in school and at home. We are now bringing in our own books so that we can read them in our reading area when we have completed our learning. We are also going to be voting for the book to be read each day during our story time, the book will be chosen from the books that are brought in.

Here are some of our favourite books. We will be adding to this gallery as we bring in books.

1C - Maths No Problem

Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 2:35pm

In Maths No Problem, we have been exploring numbers to 10. We have been counting forwards and backwards and ordering the numbers accordingly, itentifying missing numbers, continuing from a given number, and singing number songs.

We have also been using manipulatives and drawings to show our understanding as well as forming our numbers the correct way and even learning how to write the names of numbers to 10!

1C PE team building

Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 2:18pm

In PE we have been learning how to work as a team. We learned that communication is a key aspect of teamwork. we had to hold a ball with our partner without using our hands and move around without dropping it. We found this really tricky at first, but once we realised that talking to eachother about how we wanted to move and in what direction we wanted to go, we found this a lot easier. The same principles helped us when we had to sit back to back with our arms interlocked, we had to try and get up from the ground without using our hand. For this we needed to rely upon our partner, trusting that we would be supported and not be left to fall over.

1C PSHE Relationships

Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 2:09pm

PSHE - Atumn 1 - Relationships

We have been finding out about eachother's families (who we will live with), exploring and discussing our likes and dislikes, looking at how we are all similar but have differnces in what we look like and explaining how we are unique.

IMG_2097.JPG   IMG_2098.JPG   IMG_2099.JPG   IMG_2100.JPG   IMG_2101.JPG   IMG_2157.JPG  IMG_2167.JPG  IMG_2168.JPG   IMG_2183.JPG   IMG_2188.JPG

We used mirrors to study the features on our faces and used real artist scetching pencils to scetch our portraits.

1C Golden Tie

Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 1:56pm

Golden Tie

Every week, a child in our class is awarded the golden tie. This is a reward for consistently showing respect, responsibilty and resilience. We can show these traits by being well prepared for school and learning, trying our best and not giving up, being in the right places at the right times and listening carefully, helping out and being kind to eachother and looking after our clasrrom resources.

Science September Materials 2021

Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 1:34pm

Materials - September 2021

We have enjoyed exploring materials and their properties in our science lessons this half term. We started off by having a little quiz to find ourt what we already know about materals. We then used our knowledge organisers to learn the names of every day materials and their properties. At the beginning of each lesson, we used our knowledge organisers to play games such as 'Fastest finger first', spot the material and Mrs Carey called out some properties and we had to point to the material that we thought best suited her clues. Our knowledge organisers really help us with our learning, we even have them on our tables to refer to during our learning. We can even check our spellings too!

IMG_2035.JPG    IMG_2036.JPG   IMG_2037.JPG   IMG_2038.JPG   investigating materials.JPG

We had a special visitor from a local high school who came in to show us how to make a parachute. But first we had to discuss which materials would be best suited for a parachute. We then chose our materials, made our parachutes and tested them outside to see if our choices were suitable.

IMG_0025.JPG    IMG_0026.JPG  IMG_0030.JPG   IMG_2067.JPG   IMG_2069.JPG   IMG_2077.JPG

We then went on to sort, and describe materials according to their properties.
