RM : World Book Day

RM : Magnets (UTW: Science)

This week we have been a deploring magnets. We looked at the different materials that were magnetic and felt the force when magnets repelled. We then had magnet races.

RM: Exploring Transport ( UTW: Geography and Computing)

This week we began our new topic Travel and Transport. We explored different types of vehicles and how different countries have different types of vehicles. 

We then collected data of our favourite vehicles by creating a tally chart and pictograms on the iPads. 

RM: Renoir (EAD: Art)

This week we have been exploring the winter painting created by Renoir. We looked at how we can make colours lighter and darker by adding white and black. We also explored different brush techniques such as long brush stroke, short brush stroke and stippling. 

 

RM : Floating and Sinking ( UTW: Science and EAD: DT)

This week we have been trying to help the penguin from lost hand found get home to the South Pole. We explored floating and sinking and tested different materials to make sure the penguin got home safely. 

We then created our own boats, thinking very carefully about the materials we were using. We tested them in the water to make sure they worked and made any changes needed. 

RM: Alaska (UTW: Geography)

This week we have been exploring Alaska and comparing it to where we live. We used maps and globes to help us locate Alaska. The children packed their suitcases ready to board the plane on a long flight.

 

RM: Trip to Imagine That

Last week, reception went on a trip to Imagine that. our day was filled with lots of fun and exciting activities. As we have been exploring melting and freezing in school, the children created their own snow and watched a dry ice show. We also made our own slime and explored the science and role play areas.

RM: Melting and Freezing (UTW: Science)

This week we have been exploring melting and freezing and had the help the poor vegetables get free after the evil pea had frozen them. We investigate the fasted way to melt the ice. Once we had caught the evil pea, we came up with a plan to trap him.. we had to freeze him. The children decided on the best place to put him to make him freeze the quickest. 

RM: Arctic Animals (UTW- Science)

This week we had a special delivery in our class. A penguin egg appeared and began to crack and hatch. The children have been exploring lots of different information about penguins including how big they are, what they do , how they keep warm and the life cycle. 
We became penguins ourselves and felt what it would be like to have blubber. 

We were also able to explore the outdoors when it had snowed. We built snowmen, made snow angels and talked about all the changes.

RM: Exploring winter (UTW- Geography and Science)

This week the children have been exploring winter. We looked at how the trees change, animals hibernate and what we must wear in winter to stay warm. We went on a winter scavenger hunt in the forest.

 

RM: The Nativity (UTW: RE)

This week we have been looking at the Nativity story that Christians believe. We explored the different people from the story and why Christian's celebrate christams. 

The children had a go at retelling the Storting in the role play area and using the small characters from the small world area. 

RM: Diwali (UTW: RE)

This week we have been exploring the celebration of Diwali, the festival of light. We looked at why Diwali was celebrated and the story of Rama and Sita.

We had our own Diwali celebration and the children made diva lamps out of clay and decorated them in bright colours and glitter. 

RM: Birthdays (EAD and UTW)

This week we have been exploring our birthday traditions- we heard all about the exciting things the children do every year when it is their birthday. We also looked at different birthday traditions from around the world.

We then created one of our birthday traditions. The children baked the most delicious cakes, we discussed the different textures of the ingredients and used our 5 senses to describe them. 

RM: Chinese New Year (UTW and DT)

We have been exploring all the traditions of Chinese New Year and even had a go at dragon dancing. 

We also worked as teams to build dragon heads using all of our collaging and joining skills.

RM: Bonfire night (UTW and PSED)

This week we have been exploring bonfire night celebrations. We learned all about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate bonfire night with fireworks. The children recorded and told us facts they had learned about Guy Fawkes. We recorded these on an outline of his body and the children drew their own ideas of what Guy Fawkes was like. 

 

We also explored how to stay safe during bonfire night and around fire. The fire service came into school and gave us lots of advice on how to stay safe around fireworks and sparklers. We even had the chance to look at the fire truck and have a go at using the hose.

RM: Halloween shadows (UTW)

This week we have been exploring the topic of halloween. The children completed an investigation to see if light can travel through all materials. The children recorded the results of their investigation. Following this, we discussed the transparent and opaque materials and that opaque materials will create a shadow as it blocks the light. 

 

The children had a go at investigating shadows and creating their own halloween shadow puppets. The children put together performances as a group using their halloween puppets.

RM: Autumn

This week the children have been exploring autumn. We looked for signs of autumn and learned all about hibernating animals. The children created their own leaf men based on our literacy book that week using natural autumnal resources they had collected themselves from their autumn walks with their families. 

We also had the opportunity to use the iPads to take photos of autumn. We learned how to hold the iPad safety and how to navigate the camera app. Have a look at some of our amazing photos. 

RM: People in the community

This week the children loved role playing with our hairdresser resources and really took on the role to help the people within their community.

We also explored bin collectors and how they help the local area. We were on a mission to help clear all the rubbish from around school.

After our visit to the church for the harvest festival the children created their own artwork of the local area using the inspiration of the artist Paul Klee. 

Food Bank Charles Thompson Mission Charity

We have been blown away by the amount of food that the families of Townfield have generously donated to Charles Thompson Mission charity! When the donations were collected on Tuesday, the volunteers from the charity said that our school had provided the biggest harvest that they had received this year! We thank you all very much for your ongoing support and generosity. You have helped so many people in need this harvest season.

 

RM: Comparing sizes

The children have been exploring size this week. We have found big, small and medium objects around the room and put them in order.

RM: The Three Little Pigs story

This week, we have continued exploring our story and the children have recreated their own versions using the key phrases from the story. We also had a go at programming a beebot to move around a path. We focused on using our directional language to help move it.

This week, we have been reading the story 'The Three Little Pigs'. The children then focused on different joining skills to create their own houses that the Big Bad Wold wouldn't be able to blow down.

During our first week in school, the children shared their family photographs and loved talking about who was in their family. The children then drew their families and used their new colour mixing skills to paint them.
