1C Zones of Regulation

Class: 1C - Mrs Carey Year: 2023 - 2024

We have been learning all about The Zones of Regulation.

The Zones of Regulation is an approach used to support the development of self-regulation in children. All the
different ways children feel and the states of alertness they experience are categorized into four coloured zones. Children who are well regulated are able to be in the appropriate zone at the appropriate time. I our classroom, we have a display where the children can move their faces into the appropriate that matches how they are feeling throughout the day;

Blue Zone - tired, sad, fed up, sick, bored.
Green Zone - calm, happy, ready to learn, focused.
Yellow Zone - silly, over excited, worried, frustrated.
Red Zone - angry, out of control, terrified.

Why we use Zones of Regulation;
To teach children how to:
Identify their feelings
Be aware of what zone they are in
Start to use tools to be in the appropriate zone for the moment

How the Zones of Regulation are introduced;
Identify our own feelings using Zones language in front of your child (e.g. “I’m frustrated, I am in
the yellow zone”)
Talking about what tool we will use to be in the appropriate zone (e.g. “I’m going to go for a walk, I
need to get to the green zone”)
Labelling what zone a child is in throughout the day (e.g. “you look sleepy, you are in the blue
zone”)
Teaching children what Zones tools can be used to help them stay in the zone or move to a different zone (e.g. “you are tired, let’s read a book together in the reading area. We’re in the blue zone”)
Referring to the visuals on our lanyards when talking about zones.

Zones Tools.
Zones tools are sensory based strategies that are easily accessible within our immediate environment
Every zone is a good zone and appropriate at different times.

The children have been creating Zones of Regulation posters to help them understand different feelings and what they can do to help themselves.
